He who covers his sins will not prosper; but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
The orderliness and well-being of one’s life can be linked to a personal relationship with God. Unconfessed sin is the ultimate disorder in life. Confession and repentance lead to restoration of a right relationship with God.
When we sin against God, one of our first reactions is to attempt to hide from Him. We feel shame. As Adam did. “And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” (Genesis 3:8 NKJV) Human nature drives us to hide when we do something outside God’s will or even outside of what is right. But there is nothing that is concealed from God and all secrets will be revealed.
The action we must take as believers is to respond to God. Run toward Him. God offers us forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ. So instead of hiding we must open ourselves up to the mercy and grace of God and seek forgiveness and repentance. Scripture stresses the necessity of repentance from sin if individuals are to have full fellowship with God. Confession comes when we go to God and acknowledge our need for Him. And God responds according to His Word and His promise. “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9 NKJV)
God forgives our sins on the basis of the once for all sacrifice of His Son, Jesus on the cross. Believer’s sins are no longer held against them on account of Jesus’ atoning death and resurrection. Sometimes it’s hard to believe that God could love us like He does, but we must remember these things:
- It’s God nature to forgive – “Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.” (Exodus 34:5-7 NKJV)
- God promises to forgive – “Seek the Lord while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” (Isaiah 55:6-7 NKJV)
- We have a need of forgiveness – “But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on allwho believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:21-23 NKJV)
- Forgiveness begins with a prayer. “To You, O Lord, I lift up my soul.” (Psalm 25:1 NKJV)
Praise the name of Jesus, our foundational verse ends with a promised blessing. “but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Grace and mercy are qualities of God’s character by which He shows Himself as compassionate, accepting, and generous. He shields us from His wrath, forgives us, and bestows upon us His righteousness so that we can grow in our faith and obedience to Him. God’s grace and mercy are made known in Jesus Christ. “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:16-17 NKJV)
Friend, when we sin, our first reaction may be to run and hide. But stop when you feel yourself doing that and run to Jesus. He is there to have compassion on you, accept you, and be generous with His forgiveness and love. God’s Word says, “For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all who call upon You.” (Psalm 86:5 NKJV)
Dear Lord, You cannot justify sin. You are opposed to it. But Lord, You also give us a way to forgiveness and that is through Your death and resurrection. Lord we come to You with a repentant heart, seeking Your forgiveness. Have mercy on us and pour out Your grace upon us. Our desire is to reconcile our relationship with You. Thank You that whoever confesses and forsakes their sin will obtain Your mercy. We love You, Lord and pray in Your Name, Jesus. AMEN
Don’t believe me, believe God!
