Philippians 2:3-4 NKJV – Looking out for others

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

As believers, we should pray, not only for our own needs, but for the needs of others.  Intercession for others is pleasing to God because it demonstrates our love for others.  Scripture illustrates a range of attitudes towards other people, some of which God commends.  Love is one of them.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another. (John 13:34-35 NKJV) Christian love has Christ’s sacrificial love as a model.  Jesus Christ’s love was shown by His total giving of Himself, to the obedient suffering and death on the cross.  This sacrifice reveals God’s amazing love for us and sharing in the fellowship of God’s love is common in believers.

We worship together. “We took sweet counsel together, and walked to the house of God in a throng.” (Psalm 55:14 NKJV)

We pray together. “These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.” (Acts 1:14 NKJV)

We break bread together.  “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.” (1 Corinthians 10:16-17 NKJV)

Friend, when we love one another as Jesus loves us, we know that God abides in us.  “No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.” (1 John 4:12 NKJV) The love of God for His Son, Jesus, is the source of the love that binds the fellowship of believers together as a family.  By giving us Jesus, God introduced us to the perfect love and eternal life that the Father and the Son have always enjoyed.

Dear Lord, thank You that You teach us to love one another as You love us.  Lord, help us to esteem others before ourselves and to look out for one another.  May we spend time with You in prayer, not only for ourselves, but for others, too.  May we always demonstrate Your love and be a light in this dark world.  In Jesus Name.  AMEN
