That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Jesus is always present in us and a gracious blessing that He dwells in our hearts. Matthew Henry once said, “Where His Spirit dwells, there He swells.” Those are powerful words. Certainly, the more we exercise our faith in Christ, the more He pours into us by His Holy Spirit. And the more we receive, the more our faith grows. And the more our faith grows, the more we receive. And so on, and so on. Through all of this, God’s desire is that we would be settled and established in His love for us so that we can return even more love toward God and be able to pour out that love to others and inspire them to have a greater love for God.
The love of Jesus Christ arises from the love of His Father. “For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works that these, that you may marvel.” (John 5:20 NKJV) And the love of Jesus reveals the Father’s love. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NKJV) So the understanding of the width, the length, the depth, and the height of the love of Christ is centered in the love that Jesus has for the Father and the Father for Jesus.
Jesus gave His life in obedience and love for His Father. We mattered so much to the Father that Jesus said, “Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42 NKJV) Jesus, the One who had taken upon Himself a complete human nature was yet determined to follow the will of His Father and die for us. The redemption of all humanity was accomplished in Jesus selfless obedience to His Father.
That is the love of Christ which passes knowledge. Human knowledge is incapable of understanding this love. It is only through the Holy Spirit that we are able to understand such love. When we have the opportunity to meditate and dwell in this love, nothing around us matters. There is nothing that is capable of taking our minds and distracting us. The love of Christ surpasses all things. And when we get to that place, a place of God’s presence, we can begin to be filled with all the fullness of God. That my friend, is accomplished through prayer. Prayer is the power by which God’s promises are released.
Friend, we can come to God over and over and over to bask in His presence and love; for a touch of His Holy Spirit so that others may know the love of Christ for them. There are no boundaries. We have complete access to Him. Let’s take time daily to pray and seek the love of Christ in us so that we can return that love to Him and to a lost and dying humanity. When we do that God promises that we will be filled with all the fullness of God.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your eternal love for us. Thank You Jesus that while we were still sinners, You died for us. May we be rooted and grounded in the understanding of that love so that we may be lights to a dark and senseless world. May we desire to spend even more time with You in prayer so that we can return to You the love You so graciously poured out on us. May we be transformed by Your love so that other may see Your love in us. In Jesus Name. AMEN.
Don’t believe me, believe God!
