I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.
Jesus as our shepherd did more than risk His life, He gave His life, enduring death on behalf of sinners. Jesus’ total giving of Himself is shown supremely in His obedient suffering and death on the cross. This act of giving continues to motivate and inspire Christians today.
Jesus Christ’s love moved Him to give His life for others. “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us.” (1 John 3:16 NKJV) The love of Jesus stems from the Father. “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NKJV) Just as a shepherd protects and cares for his flock, our Shepherd Jesus, cares for us. Jesus has loving compassion for the helpless. “But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.” (Matthew 9:36 NKJV) Jesus provides for and protects His sheep. “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.” (John 10:9 NKJV) And Jesus lays down His life for His sheep.
Jesus Christ, our Lord and Shepherd. “For the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 7:17 NKJV) I had times in my life where I wandered in the wilderness not knowing my way, not understanding where my life was going, and wondering how I could care for myself. I was lost and without a shepherd.
Then came the day when I saw my shepherd. He was coming after me. He left the remaining flock to search for me. And when I stopped long enough to hear His calling, He captured me in His arms and brought me to the safety of the flock. “And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:28 NKJV)
Friend, today I reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and His incredible love for me. Jesus’ death paid the price for my sins. I was lost, but now I’m found. “And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost.” (Luke 15:6 NKJV) The same incredible love and care is available for all. Jesus continues to pursue those who are lost as a shepherd for his sheep. Stop for a moment and listen. Jesus is calling your name. He wants to return you to the flock where He can love and care for you. God’s desire has never changed. He desires to spend eternity with you.
Dear Jesus, thank You for coming after us. Thank You for Your everlasting love and for Your sacrifice You gave for us. Jesus, You gave Your life so that we would live. May we place our belief and trust in You. Keep us close, dear Lord, so that we do not wander away. In Jesus Name. AMEN
Don’t believe me, believe God!
